I’ve thought long and hard, and I’ve come up with the only 3 good things about winter.
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- Fleece
Seriously, can you really come up with any more?
I’ve thought long and hard, and I’ve come up with the only 3 good things about winter.
Seriously, can you really come up with any more?
Tomorrow’s it. Tomorrow’s high is 71 degrees. And then we’re down into the 40s. Yikes. Actually, when I read that forecast out loud a moment ago, with a tone of horror in my own voice, Ashby practically yelled, “Sweet!” He’s the most warm-natured person I’ve ever met. With the possible exception of the 9yo and her dad. Really, it’s a close call between the 3 of them.
It’s hard to say right now about the 3yo. He thinks it’s fun to put a coat on, except when he doesn’t. I guess he hasn’t chosen his team — coats or no coats — yet.
Me? I’ll be at the park for a nice walk in the morning before the rain comes in, and then I’ll be back home turning up the heat and getting out all the fleece blankets. [Haha, I'm kidding. I got the fleece blankets out two weeks ago.]
Here’s this a.m.’s satellite image of Hurricane Ike. It’s covering almost the entire Gulf of Mexico.
My parents live near Destin, FL, and the beaches have been closed there for two days. Yesterday the flags were at double red — you can get arrested for going in the water. They went down to the edge of the closed boardwalks yesterday to look at the surf. It’s apparently quite amazing.
Also yesterday, Highway 98 on Okaloosa Island (between Destin and Fort Walton) was closed because it was underwater. That’s a significant impediment to traffic in the area. Astounding, for a hurricane predicted to make landfall nearly 600 miles away, as the crow flies.
See the Northwest Florida News website for some videos and photos.
I have so many memories of the Nashville tornado in 1998. My neighborhood was one of the epicenters of destruction 10 years ago today. Tonight, my church hosts part of the city’s official commemoration, with an original choral piece we commissioned for the occasion. See The Gardener, composed by David K. Childs, conducted by Joe Lee, tonight at East End United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. I’d get there early if I were you. I’m only guaranteed a seat because I’m in the choir.
I’m going to share some scattered memories here.
It’s supposed to be nearly 70 on Monday. After about a week of cold weather, I’m done with winter.
We are waiting, waiting, waiting for the new stove. It was supposed to come tomorrow, but the plumber [who is installing all the gas lines, including to my new water heater and YAY to my gas grill] had to resked for next week, so I moved the stove delivery too so as not to be without one at all for several days. Unreliable and old as the current stove is, it does at least cook stuff. Mostly.
The big news here at Fixin’ Supper is that I canceled the cable earlier this week.
"What?" you say. "I know that’s not possible, because all we’ve been getting here all week are links to articles on del.icio.us. What the @#$#@ are you doing, if you’re not watching TV and you’re not blogging??"
Hahaha good point you have there, in the conversation we’re having in my head. Whoever "you" might be.
Well this week the 8yo is here, so I’m sure you realize, this week is all about homework.
I have actually cooked several things in the past couple of days, in a last-minute frenzy, as if I’d miss this awful stove once it’s gone.
* Chocolate peanut butter treats [They probably have a real name but I'm too lazy to go look it up.]
* Roasted butternut squash soup. To.Die.For. Don’t be fooled by the time to make this in the recipe: It takes all day. First you make the toasted spice mix, then the roasted squash and only THEN the soup. Worth every minute.
* Green beans with cracker crumbs. I must have expounded on these before here. [Apparently not. I will share the secret with you soon.] It makes no sense why these are so good, but they are.
* More chicken and rice.
And I’ve spent most of today and tonight reading about the weather online, of course. Someone at work asked me what the heck I’d do about tornadoes, without cable.
Pause.
I thought the whole point of a tornado was to interrupt your cable access, but maybe that’s a unique phenomenon in East Nashville. Of course, as a long-time East Nashville resident, I have both my battery-powered weather radio, and intimate knowledge of every weather website on the web. So whether we’re having a lose-the-power storm or a freakishly-didn’t-lose-the-power storm, I’m all over it.
These are the kinds of days that make me declare, "Fall is my favorite season!" Of course, there are days in April that make me say the same about spring, and most of June makes me love summer best.
I can definitively say that a typical January in Nashville marks winter off my nice list. Every January and February, I’m all in favor of global warming. [During August, not so much, but that's a different story.]
We’ve got a crazy weekend planned here at Fixin’ Supper, so I’m not sure how much cooking there will be. Really must find time to get back into the kitchen, especially since all the dishes are currently cleaned and put away. We cannot allow that to stand for long.
Happy fall!
But only because it’s 79 degrees and rising here in the house.
They say this is the last day of 100+ temperatures. I sure hope so! Silly me, taking two days off when it’s too hot to do anything outside.
On the plus side, everyone in the house has gotten a haircut in the past two days. We’re all very stylish now.
Just look at the weather forecast for next Thursday and Friday here in Nashville:
I don’t believe it. Do you??
Meanwhile, I’m headed out to grab a sandwich. I’ll be adding to the temperature of the swamp we currently live in, since it’s too damn hot to walk a few blocks to get a sandwich [at least, if I expect to return to my office this afternoon, where other people will kind of expect me to be presentable].
Could there be more weather weirdness? Days and days of 100+ temperatures in Nashville. Our drought seems to be a permanent fixture now. There’s flooding in San Antonio, with a hurricane still in the Gulf headed in that direction.
A massive earthquake [admittedly, not actually weather] in Lima, Peru.
I’m expecting frogs and locusts any day now.
