Rivals is doing a cool series on the U. Memphis Tigers…my second-favorite college basketball team. One video features Willie Kemp, who hails from my hometown of Bolivar, TN. [Did you ever notice that it's only in sports journalism that people hail from anywhere? No one would say "President-elect Obama hails from Chicago." It's ridiculous.]
h/t: My cousin Brian emailed me the video.

It’s true about the word hails. I used it in a college paper once, and one of my favorite profs pointed that out to me. Thankfully, he is a big sports fan and knew I wrote for the school paper, so he didn’t hold it against me.
Ha, you are lucky. I had one of my favorite professors point out to me I’d used masculine third person nouns in a paper, scold me for not being gender-aware since I worked for the paper, and then he STILL marked me down a letter grade over it.
I’m still not sure whether to be mad at him or Helen Johnson over it. But I am the master of writing grammatically correct sentences while avoiding all gender-specific pronouns in the abstract now.
For your faithful readers, could you please post a picture of your cousin Brian? I miss his good looks. Happy thanksgiving. Luckily, this year I only have to bring the desserts!
