Pregnancy update

by lcreekmo on October 29, 2008

Now, I’m not turning into a pregnancy blogger. I actually have done a lot of cooking lately, but I need to get my pictures and my thoughts all in the same place. More coming on that front.

But in the meantime, I have two small items to share.

  • My next door neighbor is so far winning the “best reaction” contest. The 9yo is now in the habit of going around asking me, “Did you tell her/him?” [Whoever we happen to be talking to at the moment.] And so then she is excited to announce the impending arrival. This evening, our neighbor was walking up the drive as we came in from dinner. The 9yo rolled down the window to tell her our news. And upon hearing, Susan dropped her mail and her jaw. We all cracked up!
  • Second, I had given all my maternity clothes to a good friend a few years ago. I emailed her earlier this fall and said, Hey no big deal if you’ve given them away, but if you haven’t, can I get those back?? Heh. So they arrived this week and I eagerly opened the box, looking for a particular outfit I remembered. I wore it to work yesterday. Just as comfortable as I remembered from 10 years ago. But….let’s just say that pants looked really different 10 years ago. The pants were ankle length and very narrow at the ankle. So I put on my brown shoes, and there was a big problem. An inch-wide gap between my shoes and my pants. Sigh.

I guess I am going to have to buy new brown shoes, which is a better solution than not wearing those pants again, sadly. My existing brown shoes work great with every OTHER outfit I have. But I am not exactly fitting in lots of those other outfits these days.

Well this is funny

by lcreekmo on October 23, 2008

Tonight, we were at dinner with  — you’re going to need a flow chart, I promise. We were at dinner with an old friend of Ashby’s and her husband. She also is a Vandy grad, but neither of us knew her in school. However, she was my ex’s last serious girlfriend before he started dating me. And we discovered tonight, apparently she and Ashby had become friends in Knoxville [Vandy grads in a foreign land] and were out drinking the night the ex and I got married. You had to be there, but it was so damn funny telling it now, 15 years later.

A great time was had by all, but the point is this. At dinner, I said, “Now, did Ashby tell you we’re expecting?” [He hadn't.] Then he goes, “I thought we were going to announce it this weekend.”

I died laughing. He looked confused. I said, “Umm, whom will we announce it to? Everyone knows.”

He goes, “I haven’t told anyone.”

Umm, oops. Well, the kids and I have. And you can’t keep secrets in my family. You tell one person and shortly, 60 far-flung, long-lost cousins whom you’ve never met are calling to congratulate you.

And now you know, if you didn’t already. Don’t spoil the surprise, mmk? I may already be in trouble. ;)

Real cream is really awesome

by lcreekmo on October 4, 2008

I’ve cooked for a long time — full meals since I was 12. And in most of that time, I’ve tried to be fairly healthy with my day-in, day-out recipes. I’ve used low-fat everything. I rejected low-fat cheese early on, since it doesn’t even taste like cheese, but on most other dairy products, I have tended to use the low-fat version. I use boneless, skinless chicken breasts when I’m cooking chicken. I’ve cooked more hamburgers and meatloaves with ground sirloin and ground turkey than you can count.

But slowly, over the past couple of years, I’ve stopped. It’s happened by bits and pieces–keeping cream in the house at all times. Buying ground beef instead of a leaner ground meat. And it’s all about flavor.

I’ve decided it’s better to eat a little bit of the great stuff than to eat a large portion of the OK stuff. Better to eat six days of salads and one day of pasta with real cream sauce.

Don’t be alarmed. My cholesterol’s just fine, as is Ashby’s. I haven’t gained any weight from eating this way. But it sure does make me happier. That whole moderation thing really matters, I think. We’re not good at moderation today in America. But I’m going to keep working on it if I get to keep eating homemade ice cream by doing so.
